Property services and care for elderly in one

AN ENTREPRENEUR has set up a new business in Fowey, helping townsfolk sell their homes and look after the elderly, all under one roof.

After being unable to find the necessary support for her elderly father, Greer Bailey gave up a successful career and moved to Fowey from Devon five years ago to look after him.

When he passed away two years ago, the 52-year-old wrote a business plan for a service that would provide the elderly people in the town an at-home support service.

She said she had been trying to find a way to make a care business more lucrative and had stumbled across an idea while working in an estate agency at the port.

"I recognised there was not an estate agency in town that helped those who had brought a property onto the lettings' ladder," she said.

"A business needs different aspects to it to make it succeed in these hard times that we are in."

The previous health, safety and wellbeing manager said she now runs a business in Fowey that offers unique services.

The "umbrella company", now officially opened on Fore Street, is made up of estate agency – Cornwall Homes and Holiday – and care agency – Fowey Facilities Management and Home Care Services.

Both branches of the business work from under the same roof, seven days a week.

The change of use of the property from a shop had previously been rejected by Fowey Town Council but was approved at a sub-area planning committee meeting last Wednesday in St Austell and has now officially opened.

"The property business will promote Fowey all year round, and the care business will enable elderly people to stay in their own homes."

"We will provide care services from domestic provision to housekeeping support.

"There will be cleaning services, shopping services and help with things like television problems or burst light bulbs.

"A lot of the time people go into a care home is because of the small practical things. If they know they have someone to visit them once a week it will help to put them at ease.

"At the same time, Cornwall Homes and Holiday will provide the full package for home-buyers and encourage tourism to the town all year round."

The property branch of the company now employs three full-time staff – one as a full-time residential sales apprentice, while the care service branch employs one full-time housekeeping apprentice and one part-time member of staff.
