Protest planned to save care home

PLANS are afoot for a special protest later this month, in opposition to any plans to close Hafod y Gest care home in Porthmadog.

The plans, which were put on hold before Christmas, were to close the council-run care home and replace it with 42 extra care flats to encourage people to live independently for longer.

Councillors have come up with a 10-year Corporate Asset Strategy (2009-19) to sell assets which the council no longer need and help reduce the need to borrow money.

In a revised Asset Strategy Report, Gwynedd Council now lists the care home as one of the assets they are considering selling. Cllr Selwyn Griffiths, who represents the Porthmadog West ward on Gwynedd Council, argued the proposals were not what the community wanted.
